Brittainie’s Modeling Debut

June 4, 2010

Today is Brittainie’s high school graduation (!!!!!). I know everyone says this, but yes, those four years come and go so quickly! These images were taken from a modeling job Brittainie did. She was in a fashion show at the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos. After the show finished, we went outside for about 10 minutes to capture a few shots.

When she first walked onto the runway, I did not even recognize her! I was sitting there waiting and waiting to see her, and this redhead comes out and gets all the way to the end of the runway before I even REALIZE this is my daughter Brittainie! She just looked so different, can you believe I didn’t recognize her for a minute? She looks gorgeous,  very much like Christina Hendricks.

The Hiller Aviation Museum was a great place for a session, I wish we’d had more time there. Isn’t that color stunning on her?

Congratulations Brittainie, you are a college girl now! As they say, you’ve come a long way baby!

Brittainie’s Prom

May 24, 2010

My beautiful baby girl is all grown up! We did her last high school portrait session a few weeks ago after she got ready for prom.

Taylor & Mimi of Thi Cosmetics created Brittainie’s prom look. They decided to create a look for her that was playful and youthful. Obviously, they did a fantastic job, thank you so much Taylor and Mimi, you did an amazing job!!!

Brittainie has been accepted to CSU Monterey Bay, we are so proud of her! She’ll be living in the dorms for the first year, and she is considering studying marine biology. She’ll be able to walk to the beach, and she is looking forward to lots of bonfires and maybe some surfing lessons.

Congratulations baby, we are so proud of you!

Summer Wedding Trends & Ideas

May 20, 2010

We recently had the opportunity to interview Laura Little, the genius behind Floramor and she shared some great insight about working with a florist, what to look for, coming color trends and budgeting for flowers and decor. We’ve worked with Floramor for years on some of our biggest weddings, and they do an amazing job.  Read below for some really great advice!

Tell us a little bit about you and your business

My husband Stephen and I started Floramor in 1984.  We wanted the freedom to love what we do and to hopefully make a living from it.  I had come from 7 years of working in a chemical lab environment and I just could not imagine doing that forever.  We both had art related background so we took to the floral and event design easily.  That was 25 years ago!  We are now the florists for both Ritz-Carlton San Francisco and Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay as well as The Four Seasons San Francisco and Millennium Towers.  In designing events, we can do as little or as much as our clients need.  We can do flowers alone or orchestrate the entire production.  I think our clients come back over and over because we really take the time to get to know what they are hoping for and use only the finest materials.  Each year we create new designs so that everything we turn out is fresh and new.

What are some upcoming trends that you have seen?

Each year there are a few design elements that really stand out.  I think that this year candle light is popular as it always is.  Nothing is more romantic than a room filled with candles.  This year we have had quite a few brides ask us to decorate the ceiling of their venues with fabric and light while minimizing the table centerpieces.  This is a great way to bring the price down while creating a very strong visual image.

Color is popular of course.  I am seeing many brides ask for strong and contrasting colored flowers displayed in a simple style.  Minimalism with a punch.

Adding touches such as unique seating card displays or favor tables has become even more popular over the last couple of years.   It seems that when the economy takes a dip, couples start to think of wonderful touches that they can add to the wedding without adding that expense to the overall budget.  We have had couples design and create their own invitations, menus and seating cards.

As far as color trends…black and white with a splash of color is very popular.  Orange and green really stands out this summer…a fresh summer look without the fall look that orange normally connotes.

Half Moon Bay Ritz Carlton

How can brides make the most of their floral budget?

Try to design the ceremony decor to serve as reception decor in some way.  Using things twice is a great way to save money.

Donate your flowers following the event using a company such as www.thespeaciale.com.   This is a great way to write off some of the expense and really does lift the spirits of the many organizations that get to enjoy the flowers for the week following the wedding.

Do low centerpieces on all of the tables with the exception of the bridal and family tables where you can do the over the top tall ones…..adding the drama at focal points.

What advice do you have for brides just starting to look for florists?

First and foremost do not make the mistake of NOT telling them your budget.  When I have a bride say “oh I don’t really know what to spend” I have no guideline as to what to suggest.  We do weddings where brides spend $2,000 on flowers and others that spend $100,000 and without guidelines it is hard to guess.  If you do not know what your specific floral and decor budget is, figure that about 15% of your overall wedding budget will go to decor.  Let your potential florists know the basic number at the start…you can always revise when you get the proposal and modify the design.

Ask your friends and colleagues who is good. Personal recommendations are always trustworthy.  Trust your instincts when you meet your potential florists.  Make sure they listen to you what you want…and that they do not tell you what you want.  Bring lots of color swatches and photos.  The names of colors are very subjective….”melon” to one person may be cantaloupe and to another honeydew.  “Peacock” can be dark or light.  Color swatches are your best guard against misinterpreted colors.

Always ask to see a sample centerpiece the month prior to your wedding so that you are totally sure that the design you picked is perfect.

Let Them Eat Cake!

May 2, 2010

Cake, cake cake! A number of our couples’s cakes were featured in the recent issue of Wedding Cakes magazine.  I must admit, it’s quite the secret thrill to be out and about shopping with my mom, pass by a magazine stand and begin handing her magazines that have our work featured in them. Look at me Mom! My photos are in this magazine, and this one, and this one…

Top left photo is from Krist & Fred’s yellow themed wedding cupcakes. I loved how they were displayed, very cute idea!

Bottom row, middle image features the cake from Sonia & Andreas’s wedding. This cake was displayed on top of champagne glasses filled with flowers for a very eye catching look.

Bottom left: yellow wedding cake with initials topper is from Kristi & Fred’s wedding at Treasure Island. They had a really gorgeous cake display, with and assortment of yellow cupcakes for guests and a small wedding cake for the couple to cut.

Here is another shot of the yellow themed wedding cupcakes, by Suzanne’s Bakery.

The cake in the top right is from Rachael & Adrian’s wedding at Flood Mansion. That venue has one of the best cake display spots in San Francisco!

And finally, bottom left is from Amanda & Chris’s wedding at Palm Event Center.  Looking at all these cakes makes me hungry! Enjoy!

Ayumi & David’s Silver Creek Country Club Wedding

April 14, 2010

Stanford-Wedding-AD

Last month the day finally arrived for Ayumi & David’s wedding. You might remember this fun-loving couple from their San Francisco engagement session. These two love to have fun together, and it shows. Kelvin and Sarah photographed their wedding. The day began at Stanford Memorial Church, where Kelvin grabbed some gorgeous bridal portraits of Ayumi before the ceremony began. The one on the right here is one of my absolute favorites. I just love the backdrop of the mural and the way her veil is lit up.  Just gorgeous!

David gets emotional as he sees his bride coming down the aisle.

This is sort of a “peek” shot of the bride coming down the aisle. Her complete focus at this moment is on David, waiting for her at the alter. Friends and family from as far away as Michigan,  Hawaii and Japan came out to witness their wedding celebration.

Congratulations, David & Ayumi are married!

Stanford is wonderful for portraits, lots of nice arches, walkways and columns to create a romantic setting.  Dress by designer Enzoani. I love the beading detail at the bust. Bride’s hair and makeup styling by Wowpretty

After some portraits at Stanford, everyone headed over to the Silver Creek Country Club for the reception. Silver Creek Country Club is kept perfectly manicured and has this amazing waterfall, it’s like a portrait park!

The groom chose a formal, yet modern look, with white tie and vest underneath a black suit. These two are ALWAYS laughing together!

Silver Creek Country Club has a great space for wedding receptions. The room has a nice layout with lots of natural light and good ceilings. A good ceiling can really add a lot to your wedding images, believe me! I always notice the ceilings when I’m shooting and how that’s going to factor into the images. If the room has a good ceiling, it probably has other interesting details going for it. Like those chandeliers and crown molding.

Delicate pink cherry blossoms on the soft blue background make a stunning statement on their wedding cake. Love it! Cake by Satura Cakes in Palo Alto.

Ayumi’s mom is a florist in Michigan, which definitely comes in handy when you are a bride…

These are the best moments…

And they take the floor for their first dance. Guest flash adds a superstar touch to the image! I really liked how they put together their timeline for the reception. They took care of toasts and cake cutting earlier in the evening, so once the first dance was over, guests were invited to join in for dancing for the rest of the evening. That approach makes for a nice flow, and once the “party” starts it just keeps rolling…

Sarah scrambled out onto the golf course just after sunset to capture this stunner. Congrats to both of you Ayumi & David!

This incredible Indian wedding celebration took place at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose. This was definitely an international celebration, as Shalini had relatives from India while Martin’s family came from Germany. And the couple is living in London right now. This gorgeous celebration was put together by Nikki Khan of Exquisite Events and the florals were put together by the amazing team at Asiel Design. Everyone did a fabulous job in creating the most spectacular event.
